DIMENSIONS OF THE PROFESSIONAL BAR COUNTER AND BACK BAR

We have seen that ensuring work comfort is an obligation but also a guarantee of productivity. You will find examples of bar layouts and ergonomic dimensions that can be found behind a professional bar. Combined with stainless steel bar stations, these dimensions will help you design a bar that is comfortable to use every day. We present the 3 most common configurations with a counter featuring a traditional customer track and a variant with a shared bartender workstation and customer counter. In the back bar, the traditional variant and the bottle staircase principle.

Ergonomic Dimensions

- A: 870 - 970 mm. Height often determined based on the heights of the equipment. The back bar is not strictly a workspace, but often a storage area for glasses and refrigerators in the lower part. This is why a height greater than the front bar is tolerated. The optimal ergonomic comfort dimension for a manual coffee machine handle is 1100 mm (at elbow height when bent). However, technical and aesthetic constraints do not allow maintaining this height.

- B: 850 - 950 mm. For a person with a height of 1.60 m, the ideal worktop height is 850-890 mm; for a person with a height of 1.70 m, the ideal worktop height is 900 - 940 mm; for a person with a height of 1.8 m, the ideal worktop height is 940 - 1000 mm.

- C: 400 - 750 mm. Depth of the back bar determined by the equipment to be integrated and/or the desired aesthetics.

- D: 850 - 1300 mm. 850 mm for one person alone, 900 mm for two people rarely crossing paths, 1200 mm and more for frequent crossings.

- E: 550 - 650 mm.

- F: 350 - 500 mm. For the assembly of a cocktail by the bartender on the customer counter, allow a maximum of 400 mm. Be careful not to obstruct the bartender's view of important areas on their workspace.

- G: 300 - 600 mm.

- H: 90 - 130 mm. The ideal working height for a bar counter seems to be on average around 93 cm.

- I: 50 - 110 mm.

- J: 300 mm minimum to be seated facing the counter. 170 mm to stand at the counter.

- K: 140 - 260 mm.

- L: 160 - 240 mm.

- M: 1100 - 1150 mm. Standard bar height to stand at the counter or on a high chair. For aesthetic choices, the customer counter can be lowered to 1000 mm. To avoid having too many people at the bar, it can be raised slightly to 1200 mm, which creates a sense of discomfort at the bar. This helps to discourage consumption at the bar.

- N: 1950 mm maximum to allow bottle handling on the shelf.

- O: 650 mm minimum for a coffee machine. Do not forget the storage of cups to be heated on the machine. 500 mm for glass storage on rack and placed on back bar. 250 mm for glass storage placed on the back bar.

- P: 400 mm minimum. Standard bottle sizes around 350 mm high and 90 mm in diameter.

- Q: 700 - 970 mm.

- R: 260 - 300 mm.

- S: 500 - 650 mm with a chair. 350 - 550 mm standing in front of the counter.

- T: 450 - 500 mm distance to the foot bar or chair bar.
